“One of the downfalls of playing guitar is the pain of lugging your instrument all over creation. Now you can cut that pain in half with the Centerfold ($3370), the world's first folding electric guitar. Thanks to an innovative design, the Centerfold can go from folded to unfolded in about 20 seconds. Features include a Honduras mahogany body, a maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, DiMarzio PAF classic humbucker pickups in the bridge and neck, and nickel hardware. Yes, it's expensive, but it's also a folding electric guitar. Enough said.”No, not enough has been said, so I will take the liberty to say the rest myself.
Centerfold guitar eh?
There is no way in FUCKING HELL that thing is going to intonate properly. The only thing that’s acting as a medium is that little metallic bridge, and with guitars or any string instruments for that matter, the bigger the contact surface with the medium the better.
Best: Neck-thru construction (The neck and body are one piece)
Good: Set neck (glued on)
Common: Bolt on (with screws)
And then there is this centerfold guitar with its tinny-as metallic bridge.
That piece of $3370 royal garbage is going to sound worse than my $800 bolt-on neck, that's enough said now.
“But… But… It unfolds in 20 seconds, I can carry it around anywhere with no
hassle!”
So, while others can just pull their guitar out of a case and start shredding, what will you be doing? Probably shitting your pants trying to unfold the guitar without breaking the strings, and then again the guitar will probably need a complete re-tuning. And the fact that you roll the strings up for each fold up will really undermine the integrity of the strings.
To me, it’s not so much the size of a guitar that’s inconvenient. Guitars are actually one of the most easily transportable instruments out there. But it’s more about the weight I’m concerned about (which doesn’t really cut in half if you fold it in half).
While I commend the creativity, its only benefit of portability is outshadowed by another problem: sound quality. I’d compare it to those portable exercise machines on infomercials – ALL OF THEM can fold up and be stored under a bed but I doubt they’ll work as nicely as a proper machine in the gym.
lol, burn.
